Indonesian honour for Allan Thomas and Jack Body

On 22 August 2017, Allan Thomas and Jack Body were awarded certificates of appreciation for their services in introducing, promoting and developing gamelan in the New Zealand School of Music’s curriculum at Victoria University of Wellington by the Indonesian government. The Ambassador for the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency Bp Tantowi Yahya, presented the certificates on behalf of Associate Minister Puan Maharani, Minister for Human Development & Culture of Indonesia. Jennifer Shennan accepted the certificate on behalf of her late husband, Allan Thomas, and Judith Exley accepted the certificate on behalf of her close friend, Jack Body. Jennifer Shennan’s words on the evening: Ambassador Yahya, Mrs. Yahya, Excellencies. Hon.Gerry Brownlee, Ministers, Ladies & Gentleman - selamat sore, kia ora koutou katoa. Our daughters,  Beth & Nell, and I are happy to be reminded of the good thing Allan did in bringing the first gamelan to New Zealand, back in 1974. There are now 8 gamelan in the country —  the newest on its way to Auckland University of Technology where Dr.Joko Susilo, as the director, will arrive this week to unpack and name the ensemble. Altogether this means that hundreds of New Zealanders play or have played gamelan — and therefore thousands of New Zealanders of all ages, have heard gamelan music. Allan was enchanted with the truth that you can introduce people to gamelan, hand them the beaters and have them playing something beautiful within two minutes… as was brilliantly demonstrated by Pak Budi Putra at an open session of Gamelan Padhang Moncar at VUW last evening.  This is not true of a crate of 10 violins - - that would...

Movie fundraiser: Kartini

Friday 11 August 2017, 6pm Reading Cinemas A screening of the new movie, Kartini with live Javanese gamelan in the foyer before the film. More about the film:  “This is a story about the most famous Indonesian heroine, Kartini. In the early 1900s, Indonesia was still a colony of the Netherlands, Java is a land where noble families rule under Dutch supervision. Only noble and royal family were able to get education. Women weren’t allowed to get higher education, even for women of royal blood. Women in the Javanese culture only had one purpose - to be a bride for a man with royal blood. Kartini grew up to fight this caste system, fight for equality for women, and most importantly she fought for the right for everyone to get an education regardless of their social status or gender. This is an emotional journey of Kartini where she had to defy her own family, her own culture and she had to fight to change in rules and traditions that were considered sacred in Java.”...

‘So Short the Life’ – Jack Body

‘So Short the Life’ – Jack Body

Gamelan Padhang Moncar recreated Jack Body’s first composition for gamelan, ‘So Short the Life’ as part of a choral concert by Nota Bene at Wellington’s Sacred Heart Cathedral on 7 May 2017.  The piece was composed for the opening of the new School of Music building at Victoria University in 1989. Budi, Tristan and Pippa rehearse macapat Poster for the concert page 1 of Jack’s original handwritten score Jack described the piece as containing “few specific references to traditional gamelan composition. Instead, I have tried to focus on the nature of the instruments themselves, the attack and decay of the tones, and most especially the rich spectrum of overtones within each sound.” (jackbody.com) The text is adapted from Chaucer who was quoting Hippocrates: ‘So short the life, so long the craft to learn’ – Ars long, vita brevis.” “I had the idea that the gamelan speaks but that if we listen very carefully we can actually hear voices inside the gamelan. Perhaps that’s something to do with friends that have departed - that the memories stay with us.” Recreating the piece was a challenge as Jack’s handwritten score was a little cryptic to understand (see sample below). Using an audio recording of the original performance provided by Nga Taonga Sound and Vision and under the direction of Gareth Farr, who had been one of the original performers, we were able to successfully recreate the piece, albeit in somewhat shorter form. The piece was very warmly received in the context of a concert of several of Jack’s choral works, juxtaposed against simlar works by Benjamin Britten. The Wellington Young Voices children’s choir came and...

Review By Jennifer Shennan, Michelle Potter on Dancing, 7 December 2015 Prabhu Sri Bathara Kresna, a character in Indonesian wayang kulit shadow puppet theatre, can wield weapons of supernatural power. One of these, wijaya kusuma, is a flower so beautiful (would that be a lotus, a water lily, or passionfruit flower?), it is said to bring back the dead from their graves. The director of Gamelan Padhang Moncar, Budi Putra, must have borrowed such a flower for the evening’s performance since Jack Body, loved musician, composer, colleague, mentor and friend, who endeavoured for such a long time to bring this troupe of dancers from Jakarta to New Zealand, died earlier this year so did not live to see their performance. But every member of the...
The Fall of Alengka

The Fall of Alengka

3 October 2015 Wellington South Baptist Church, 284 The Parade, Island Bay Joko Susilo presented the story of The Fall of Alengka from the Ramayana through wayang kulit (traditional Javanese shadow puppetry), accompanied by Gamelan Padhang Moncar as part of the Out of the Suitcase Puppet Festival in Island Bay. Click on the photos to see larger images. Wayang Kulit (Photo: Kelly Kellective) Photos: Kelly Kellective Review By Ann Hunt, Dominion Post, 6 October 2015 The Fall of Alengka is a story from the great Indian epic, The Ramayana. Its creator, Joko Susilo, is an eighth-generation Indonesian shadow puppeteer, now resident in Dunedin. An integral part of the performance is the musical accompaniment by the mesmerising Gamelan Padhang Moncar. Particular mention must go to the beautiful singing of Briar Prastiti and the stirring drumming of Rupert Snook. The Gamelan adds brilliant drama and colour to the production. The beautifully made, intricate puppets demonstrate high energy and refinement, an extraordinarily wide range of emotions and movement. Great skill and dexterity, immense discipline and total concentration is required of the puppeteer. Susilonot only manipulates the puppets, but also narrates the action, sings and does some sound effects as well. His mastery is complete. The story is one of good triumphing over evil. It tells how Prince Rama battled the terrible Rawhina who had abducted his wife Princess Sinta, and of their many ordeals before they were eventually reunited. The middle traditional comic section features clowns who trade slapstick business and references to John Key and the All Blacks. The spellbound audience gave Susilo and the Gamelan a joyous standing...
