West Sumatran musicians and dancers come to Wellington
Watch randai dance theatre, hear gorgeous flute and vocal music and listen to fabulous traditional and contemporary music and dance direct from the highlands of West Sumatra.
This group of musicians and dancers from the major arts institute (STSI Padang Pajang) will be visiting Wellington for a few days only.
All events are freeto the public.

A concert of Indonesian music and dance from West Sumatra. With senior musicians and dancers from the Music Conservatorium STSI Padangpanjang: Elizar Koto, Asril Muchtar, Oktavianus Binahmad, Denny Maiyosta and company.
From the highlands of West Sumatra comes Sumatran Sounds, a show of percussion, dance and song. This is a rare opportunity to experience the unique music and dance of the Minangkabau people. Come and hear the haunting sounds of the saluang flute, watch the graceful tari piring plate dance and experience randai dance theatre. Sumatran Sounds will show case Minangkabau culture and blend traditional music and dance with innovative new compositions created by leading Minangkabau composers and choreographers.
FREE WORKSHOPS Monday 27 September, 3-4:30pm - DANCE (all ages welcome) Recreation Centre, Victoria University
Come and experience randai, martial arts dance theatre from the highlands of Sumatra, Indonesia. Instructor Bapak Arif Anas will give an interactive workshop based on the legend of Intan Kumala, that will include movement and body percussion from the ancient dance traditions of the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra.
Monday 27 September, 4:30pm - 6pm - MUSIC: percussion, wind, vocals NZSM gamelan room (next to the Adam Concert Room)
Leading performers Elizar Koto and Asril Muchtar will give a workshop on the traditional music of the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, Indonesia. Of particular interest to percussionists, vocalists and woodwind players, this is a unique opportunity to have hands on experience with tambuah, rappai and malayu drums, talempong gong chimes and saluang, sampelong and bansi flutes.
These events have been co-ordinated by Megan Collins and are supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.
